Surfing

At the start of summer 2005 I started to learn to surf. I have always lived in Cornwall, off and on, and so have always been surrounded by the surfing culture. I already owned a bodyboard surfboard, and had spent many occasions in 2003 surfing with it at beaches across Cornwall.

My new house mate Jess is a keen and experienced surfer, particularly in the past. My friend and business partner in my Cornwall web design company, Kurt, was given a mini-mal surfboard.

Once I had finished my job for the company In Devon, and spent my working days in Cornwall I started using the surfboard on a near daily basis. At first it has very hard going as my fitness levels where low. I had never realised how difficult it was to surf. One has to be very fit to surf. As the summer went by I spent more time surfing. Initially I would surf at Perranporth beach, as it was the closest to my home in Truro. However it can be inconsistent there. Porthtowan offers better waves but is so crowded, and I needed more room as a beginner surfer. I tried other beaches regularly. Watergate Bay offered good waves on many occasions. I only surfed at Fistral beach one one occasion, having just bought a new bodyboard, when my old one broke.
