Given the choice I would rather build, own and live in a modern building built with wood, straw and other natural materials.

My ideal home would be a log cabin in Cornwall, on a plot of land, right by the sea.

North Coast have been making log cabins in Cornwall for many years, and have an excellent reputation. Consistently voted as one of the best movies of all time, it’s a real favourite.

Originally a story in a Stephen King book, the Different Seasons, known as Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the story was adapted and the movie created. The movie was directed by Frank Darabont, and was his first major production. Interestingly Stephen King has written two stories about prisons, The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, which happen to be the first two movies that Frank Darabont directed. Not a bad start eh?

The story is a cruel and terrible one, in which Andy Dufresne, an educated and kind man is wrongly convicted of his wife’s murder. During his time in prison he befriends several people, who are criminals, whereas Andy is not. His life is changed forever, as he deals with the troubles of incarceration.

Stephen King’s excellent character portrayal is not limited to his horror stories, and the characters in this story are some of his best. One could even believe this was based on a true story, but it is not, King has confirmed. The story is upsetting, puzzling and warming, and the movies popularity confirms people association with the story. I think it will always be a classic.

The other stories from the Different Seasons book are
The Body – which became the movie, Stand by me
The Apt Pupil – which also became a movie
The Club – which has yet to make it to the big screen

I would recommend the book to anyone who is a fan, as it is a great collection of stories.

The Shawshank Redemption is a very popular story, whether read in a book or watched as a film.

Gwennap pit

Today I went to Gwennap pit. It is an old amphitheatre, thought to be built over the top of an old mine. The acoustics are very good there. Thousands of people used to come and hear John Wesley preach, during the hayday of Cornwall’s mining. There are two stone pillars on one side of the pit. These pillars are known as Wesley’s pulpit.

If you are going to the Gwennap pit note that it is not in Gwennap, but in St Day, just past the Star Inn (heading towards Redruth), take the left fork in the road.

Surfing at Newquay

In September 2005 I moved to Cubert, near Newquay, with my housemate Jess and another friend Adam. Being much closer to Newquay allowed me to surf the beaches in the Newquay area. I regularly started to surf the beaches in the Newquay bay. Towan beach has proved to be a favourite. This is because the shelter of the harbour keeps the waves cleaner at that end of the bay. The next beach Great Western offers bigger waves, but the waves are not so clean. Tolcarne beach has bigger waves again, but offers the least shelter. Lusty Glaze is not the best of these beaches for surfing, and as yet remains un-surfed by me. Surfing the beaches in the bay gave me a lot of experience as the beaches are all different. I have found free parking spots for all beaches.

I have surfed all of the beaches in the Newquay area. From west to east

Holywell bay – not very clean surf, but always plenty of room

Crantock – the current from the river is strong. Better for more experienced surfers.

Fistral – very busy in summer, good waves out of season

Towan – always the cleanest, but smallest wave. Crowded at high tide

Great Western – great all rounder

Tolcarne – big waves, watch out for ‘the Tolcarne wedge’ though

Lusty Glaze – more for adventure sports, but good waves

Porth – a family beach not for surfing

Watergate Bay – similar to Fistral, not so crowded though, a good beach

Barcelona

I spent 8 days in sunny Spain. Gaudi's unique designs have left a big impression on the city.

The coast line of the Catalunya region (Costa Brava) is beautiful.
The town of Tossa de Mar has retained its beauty and charm, whilst allowing some development to happen.

The Salvador Dali Museum in Figueres is well worth the effort. Ever keen to try new things I took the surf board down to Gwithian beach. I had never been there before. Well I may have been as a kid, but I didn’t’ remember. I was amazed by the beauty of the place. One of the things I love most about Gwithian is that it feels like it is abroad, like the Mediterranean, but with surf. I also love the way it is underdeveloped.

In 1996 I was DJ’ing at a night club in Hayle, called Strawberry Fields. This was the only association I had had with Hayle until now. I am not attracted to Hayle as a town. However I would consider living in one of the beach huts near Gwithian beach.

During the summer of 2005 I was very tempted to buy a camper van or a regular van and complete a partial conversion. I wanted to spend the end of the year driving down the west coast of France, Spain and Portugal looking for waves. Work commitments stopped me doing this, however I will certainly think about this again in the future.

As the summer went by I continued to surf at Gwithian beach. Getting there took only a few minutes more than beaches like Perranporth, but the experience was much better, and there was always of room to surf. The waves always tend to be clean at Gwithian, if a little smaller.

Surfing

At the start of summer 2005 I started to learn to surf. I have always lived in Cornwall, off and on, and so have always been surrounded by the surfing culture. I already owned a bodyboard surfboard, and had spent many occasions in 2003 surfing with it at beaches across Cornwall.

My new house mate Jess is a keen and experienced surfer, particularly in the past. My friend and business partner in my Cornwall web design company, Kurt, was given a mini-mal surfboard.

Once I had finished my job for the company In Devon, and spent my working days in Cornwall I started using the surfboard on a near daily basis. At first it has very hard going as my fitness levels where low. I had never realised how difficult it was to surf. One has to be very fit to surf. As the summer went by I spent more time surfing. Initially I would surf at Perranporth beach, as it was the closest to my home in Truro. However it can be inconsistent there. Porthtowan offers better waves but is so crowded, and I needed more room as a beginner surfer. I tried other beaches regularly. Watergate Bay offered good waves on many occasions. I only surfed at Fistral beach one one occasion, having just bought a new bodyboard, when my old one broke.

Florence

Rach Creed
and I spent the weekend in Florence, Italy.
Its a wonderful city, full of art and classic architecture.
